ABOUT JAMES TANNER:

James has over 40 years of experience in genealogical research and is an avid blogger of the Genealogy’s Star Blog. He has served as a family history volunteer for over 18 years and has presented at expos and conferences around the US, Canada, and Europe. He is a member of the board of directors of the Family History Guide Association and is currently serving at the BYU Family History Library. James is an attorney, a professional photographer, and has 7 children, 34 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

ABOUT THE MAIN PRESENTATION AND CLASS WITH Q&A:

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been getting a lot of media attention lately. Overall, AI is developing so rapidly that what you see and how you interact online is changing exponentially. Advancements like Chat GPT-4, DALL-E 2, self-driving cars, and natural language processing are transforming the AI landscape. Because genealogy is a subject that is highly dependent on information, come and learn about how and why AI is impacting genealogy from the implantation of handwriting recognition to indexing and beyond. 

All meetings of the Group are open to the public and have the goal of helping people use technology to further their family and personal history.  The group is in its 33rd year and previously was called the Utah Valley PAF Users Group.  On the blog is a way for anyone  to receive the press releases via email.  Members of the group ($15/year), besides being able to interact with presenters on ZOOM, receive the  monthly email newsletter TAGGology and have access to the more than 650 videos of past presentations and classes.  TAGGology newsletter contains a wealth of information about genealogy, including information for Temple and Family History Consultants.  Free sample copies of the Newsletter can be requested by emailing uvtagginfo@gmail.com  .

ABOUT ROBERT RAYMOND:

Robert Raymond is a Deputy to FamilySearch Chief Genealogical Officer, David Rencher. He is a frequent presenter at national, regional, and local conferences. He was a director of the National Genealogical Society from 2012 to 2018. Robert is a genealogist and technologist with over 40 years of experience in technology and genealogy. He holds over a dozen patents (inventions, not land ;-) ) and earned a master's degree in electrical engineering from Brigham Young University where he was honored as a Kimball Scholar. He was a member of the Eta Kappa Nu Electrical Engineering Honor Society, and the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society.

FamilySearch Family Tree is an important undertaking. You are building something bigger than yourself. While genealogists within The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints regularly use FamilySearch Family Tree, non-genealogists in the Church and genealogists outside the Church do not. As an influencer, you might wish you could convince more knowledgeable genealogists to use the Tree more often (and less knowledgeable genealogists to use it less)!  Influencers need a new mindset. COMMUNITY RESEARCH USING THE NATIONAL RIGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES AND THE HISTORICAL MARKER DATABASE

Two genealogists began a conversation over lunch and ideas began to tumble around as they approached a common research dilemma from two different angles. It wasn't long before they discovered these two valuable sites that led to valuable discoveries in their research. Those metal signs you see on old buildings or the metal historic markers by the side of the road may offer clues to the lives of your ancestors.

ABOUT PEGGY CLEMENS LAURITZEN, AG, FOGS:

PEGGY CLEMENS LAURITZEN has been an Accredited Genealogist (AG) for nearly twenty-five years, and has been involved in genealogy research her entire life. She is the author of several Legacy QuickGuides on Appalachia, an instructor at Ancestry Academy and Family Tree University, an instructor at several GRIP and SLIG courses, and a columnist for Reminisce Magazine. In 2018 she was the recipient of the Laura G. Prescott Award for Exemplary Service to Professional Genealogy and became a Fellow of the Ohio Genealogical Society. She is a former researcher at Ancestry ProGenealogists. She and her husband are Directors of the FamilySearch Center in Mansfield, Ohio. More information about her is on her web site and ICAPGen .

MEMORY KEEPERS

There is so much more to FamilySearch than the FamilySearch Family Tree and records research. One of the best things we can leave for our descendants is a plethora of memories.  It has been suggested that this may be presented as a workshop. Perhaps having a room with a good Wifi connection could help attendees follow along. But they won't want to miss any of the slides in this presentation.
