10 am - 11 am MDT: LAURIE WERNER CASTILLO on PROTECTING PHOTOS AND MEMORABILIA FROM DISASTERS: A PRACTICAL BEGINNING

11:10 - 12 Noon MDT: LAURIE WERNER CASTILLO on FAMILY HISTORY THAT LASTS: ORGANIZE, PROTECT, PRESERVE, AND CONNECT

ABOUT THE MAIN PRESENTATION:

Many of us wake up one day to find ourselves keepers of the family history or of important family heirlooms and keepsakes. The actions we take now will decide what our posterity knows of their ancestors, including ourselves! Making sure our family photos, documents, histories and memorabilia are protected, fully identified, safely displayed and properly stored. These are some of the most significant things we may ever do for our kin.  Done properly, these things will outlast us and help bind future generations to our family trees. Presentation will cover the basics and includes an introduction to websites of major suppliers of archival products, which also contain free educational brochures, articles, videos and examples. We will then visit the websites of major organizations that teach about preservation methods and techniques. These sites offer many additional free guides and resources. You will then be able to start your plan and take the first steps in a logical, ordered and comfortable way.

ABOUT LAURIE WERNER CASTILLO:

Laurie Werner Castillo was born in Santa Monica and raised in West Los Angeles with beagles and land tortoises for pets and playmates. She played on the girls basketball team for two years in high school and also loved participating in tennis, volleyball and basketball. She misses the palm trees in her front yard and the smell of the ocean every day.

After a really great educational experience in Los Angeles, she attended BYU, earning an AA in Communications and Fine Arts and a BS in Consumer Economics. She met Jerry Castillo, from San Antonio, Texas, in Utah and they have 2 children and 7 grandchildren.

Laurie is currently first vice president of the Utah Valley Technology and Genealogy Group; She is former Vice President, Executive Secretary and Board Member, of the Utah Genealogical Association; She has been a BYU FH Library consultant, tour guide and teacher for 32+ years; She has been a professional researcher and writer 34+ years; She has presented at many conferences including: RootsTech 2016-2020, BYU FH Conference 2014-2019, and BYU Education Week 2016-2017, We Are Cousins Conferences 2-7 (2021-2024); She is a former Red Cross Instructor, Girl Scout Troop Leader, Boy Scout Merit Badge Counselor and Chihuahua breeder. Her research specialties include: Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, Canada and Hispanic Research; And New England, Midwest, Southwest, Mountain States and Pacific Frontier regions of the US.

She is currently researching her WWI Ancestors, her ancestors in the 1918-1919 Influenza pandemic, her German family and Los Angeles in the early years.

Her interests include: history, mystery, geography and genetics. Add those up and you have family history.

ABOUT THE CLASS:

The ultimate goal of family record keepers is to create intergenerational connections among family members. We need to organize our histories, photos and memorabilia in a way that both protects these important items and is conducive to sharing their meaning, their stories. This presentation will explore ways of using certain archival products to best advantage. We will talk about some of the more prominent bloggers and authors on preservation ideas. Then we will consider creating copies and backups of your preservation efforts.

10 am - 11 AM MDT:  BETH ANN WISEMAN on Metadata Magic:  Preserving the Writing On the Back Of the Photo (Metadata) In Digital Photos

11:10-12 Noon MDT:  BETH ANN WISEMAN on Metadata Magic: How Do I Embed Metadata In My Digital Photos?

ABOUT BETH ANN WISEMAN:
Beth Ann Wiseman's passion is preserving family photos, both personally and professionally.  As a teenager in the 1970s, she received xeroxed copies of copies of family stories whose blubs and blurs were barely readable.  Since she was not able to source photos and stories, she pondered how she could preserve her rich family heritage for her children and grandchildren.  She has a B. A. in History and a Masters degree in Computer Science, initially working as a software developer, which included the scanning of digital images - the perfect solution for preserving and sharing family stories. At that time it was difficult to share scanned images. The rest of the story needed to go along with the images. She tried file system strategies, static html files on a CD, and even creating a database on CD.  Nothing seemed to work really well.

Beth Ann was one of the original members of the engineering team at FamilySearch that implemented Memories and she still works on that team - her dream job.  Memories addresses many of the sticking points for sharing family photos and stories.  She is also involved with an organization created by Gordon Clarke at FamilySearch to standardize how the family history industry uses metadata properties and she has been testing and validating the standards proposed by the Family History Metadata Working Group (FHMWG).

ABOUT THE MAIN PRESENTATION;
Embedding the writing on the back of the photo so that it travels with the photo as embedded metadata creates magic in finding and sharing your photos and their stories.  Once you know why, you will want to know how. This main presentation discusses why you would want to go to the effort of embedding the writing on the back of the photo into your digital photos. And what do FamilySearch and others do with metadata in a photo?

ABOUT THE CLASS:
OK, I'm convinced. I really want the magic of metadata in my digital photos. How can I do that?  What tools can I use?

ABOUT THE MAIN PRESENTATION -- FAMILYSEARCH LABS: FAMILY GROUP TREES AND THE TOGETHER APP
These new features of FamilySearch were made public at RootsTech 2024.  The Family Group Trees feature has been in the works for over 7 years and allows a family to create a private place on FamilySearch where the living members of the family can create a tree of the living where everyone can see everyone else in the group.  Memories and sources can be added and everyone in the group can see them. The Together app is a new app that is intended to be a companion to the new Family Group Trees. With it you can share many kinds of things about yourself and your family and share with the living members of your Family Group Tree.
