UTAH VALLEY TECHNOLOGY AND GENEALOGY GROUP MEETING (UVTAGG)
The next regular, second-Saturday-of-the-month meeting of the Utah Valley Technology and Genealogy Group - UVTAGG (Formerly the Utah Valley PAF Users Group - UVPAFUG) will be on Saturday, 11 Aug 2012, from 9 am to noon in the LDS "Red Chapel", 4050 North Timpview Drive (650 East), Provo. Information about the Group, main presentations, classes, and class notes are available on their website http://uvtagg.org and the press releases are at http://blog.uvtagg.org .
The main presentation this month will be by Marlo Schuldt on NEW WAYS TO SHARE AND INTEREST OTHERS IN FAMILY HISTORY. The presentation will try to achieve four goals: 1. Provide new ideas and fun ways to share family history; 2. Show ways to entice your kids, grandkids and relatives to want and ask for more; 3. Discuss innovative ideas that will get all ages involved in helping you; and 4. Offer a list of the best free resources and tools to do this. To interest the children he will discuss how to tell stories of you, your parents, and grandparents. For teenagers innovative, but not complicated, multimedia and Internet technology and the CLOUD help to dress up and present family history and he will consider a strategy to entice them into helping you. For the young family he'll show how to change the attitude of "I'm too busy for family history; that's for Grandma and Grandpa." and show how to turn a scrapbook into a family history storybook. For the older generation you will learn some easy ways to share all of your family history in various formats: printed, PDF, photos, slideshows, and more. This will not be too technical, will be fun, and Marlo says to think of it as an "all you can eat" family history smorgasbord. Marlo Schuldt is President of LifeStory Productions, Inc., an Orem, Utah-based company that develops family history software and provides assistance to individuals desiring to gather, prepare, print, and share family history. He enjoys teaching and helping others with their family history and currently teaches classes each month at the BYU Family History Library. He says he has lost track of the number of classes he has taught at national, regional, and local family history fairs, genealogy organizations, and small groups. He earned both BS and MS degrees from Brigham Young University in Communicative Disorders and is the author of two software patents. He is the father of five and has expanded his own family history to thirteen grandchildren and hopes it continues to grow.
After the main presentation the following classes are presently scheduled: (1) Easier Scanning for Better Results, by Marlo Schuldt; (2) More Time in the Cloud, by Bret Petersen; (3) Video of last month's main presentation: New FamilySearch Family Tree and the Coming Transition, by Jim Ericson; (4) Mountain Lion, The MAC OS and Using Spreadsheets, by Ron Snowden; (5) Topic to be announced, by Marilyn Thomsen; (6) Ancestral Quest: The Temple Ordinance Process, by Merlin Kitchen; (7) RootsMagic, by Sue Maxwell; and (8) Legacy, by Dean Bennett.

UTAH VALLEY TECHNOLOGY AND GENEALOGY GROUP MEETING (UVTAGG)
The next regular, second-Saturday-of-the-month meeting of the Utah Valley Technology and Genealogy Group - UVTAGG (Formerly the Utah Valley PAF Users Group - UVPAFUG) will be on Saturday, 14 Jul 2012, from 9 am to noon in the LDS "Red Chapel", 4050 North Timpview Drive (650 East), Provo. Information about the Group, main presentations, classes, and class notes are available on their website http://uvtagg.org and the press releases are at http://blog.uvtagg.org .
The main presentation this month will be by Jim Ericson, Senior Product Marketing Manager at FamilySearch International, on NEW FAMILYSEARCH, FAMILYSEARCH FAMILY TREE, AND WORKING THROUGH THE TRANSITION. FamilySearch is changing the interface for viewing our family history data in their system. The "old" interface was nicknamed "new FamilySearch" and the new interface is called "FamilySearch Family Tree". This transition is taking place gradually. Some important parts are already in operation and many UVTAGG members are using the new interface. This presentation will discuss how the changeover is going, how to work with the changes, and what to expect in the coming months. Jim Ericson, as a Senior Product Marketing Manager for FamilySearch, provides marketing guidance for FamilySearch.org and helps recruit volunteers for online community efforts, including FamilySearch indexing. He is also responsible for the editorial strategy of FamilySearch.org and helping with the rollout of new products. Jim has spent several years promoting various online genealogy services, including Ancestry.com, OneGreatFamily and FamilyLink. At the last UVTAGG meeting members where asked for questions and problems relating to new FamilySearch and their data and Jim Ericson and those accompanying him will answer those questions. During the class period following the main presentation the FamilySearch Team has offered the Group the opportunity to “Ask an Admin.” The Team regularly does this at Family History conferences. They describe "Ask an Admin" sessions as follows: Join one of FamilySearch’s experienced data analysts for an individualized, 20-minute consultation to address (and even fix where possible) 1 or 2 data issues, learn tips and tricks to optimize your new FamilySearch experience, and get answers to your questions. (Please note: Some data issues require additional research and/or investigation. In those situations a Support case may be created and the data issue resolved at a later time). At press release time we don't have the names of the full Admin Team, but there will be at least three, and the 20-minute appointments will begin at 10:40 and go to 1 PM, if required. It might be helpful if you bring your database on a jump drive and have a list of the PID's (Personal Identifiers) and problems in your nFS data that you want to ask them about. To sign up for an appointment contact Laurie Castillo by email at gengal@comcast.net or call her at 801-224-5327. This will be a major opportunity to get our questions and problems with our nFS data resolved "on the spot".
After the main presentation the following classes are presently scheduled: (1) Ask an Admin-1; (2) Ask an Admin-2; (3) Ask an Admin-3; (4) Free Software to Organize Your Digital Photos, by Marlo Schuldt; (5) MAC: Family Tree Maker for the MAC and PC, by Tom Caswell; (6) DVD of last month's main presentation: Your Personal Genealogy Library: Family History Books Online, by Don and Diane Snow; (7) Ancestral Quest, by Gaylon Findlay; (8) Legacy, by Dean Bennett; and (9) RootsMagic 5, by Renee Zamora. As always, there will be something about family history and technology for everyone at any level of expertise.

There are already thousands of FH books online and most are free to download. Donald R. and Diane M. Snow are both Californians with Utah roots; Don's ancestors are the Snows from Southern Utah and Diane's are the Manwarings from Northern Utah. They are both retired from BYU where Don taught Mathematics and Diane taught Humanities. Since retiring from BYU, they have been on four Family History missions for the LDS Church. One of these was as the Directors of the New York Family History Center in Manhattan and another was serving in the London Family History Center in the Hyde Park Chapel. They have been involved with family history for many years and Don has been a Vice President of the Utah Valley Technology and Genealogy Group since the 1990's. They are frequent speakers at genealogy and family history conferences and the details of their talks and schedules are at http://uvtagg.org/classes/dons/dons-classes.html . They have 6 children, 30 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren and are snowbirds spending half the year in Provo and half in St. George.
Following the main presentation will be the class period and, as always, there will be something about family history and technology for everyone at any level of expertise. The teachers and classes presently scheduled for this meeting are: (1) FamilySearch Family Tree, by Merlin Kitchen; (2) Q&A, by Don and Diane Snow; (3) Video of a past presentation or class - Your Choice; (4) Personal Help, by Don Engstrom & Finn Hansen; (5) MAC Projects Discussed and Reviewed, by Ron Snowden; (6) RootsMagic, by Sue Maxwell; (7) Legacy, by Dean Bennett; and (8) Ancestral Quest (teacher to be announced).
All meetings of UVTAGG are open to the public whether members of the Group or not. The Group has the goal of helping individuals use technology to further their family history and there are usually 100-125 attending the monthly meetings on the second Saturdays. The officers are Gerhard Ruf, President; Laurie Castillo, 1st VP; Don Snow, 2nd VP; Liz Kennington, Newsletter Editor; Renee Zamora, Secretary; Kay Baker, Gerry Eliason, Don Engstrom, and Rayanne Melick working with finances and membership; and Bruce Merrill and Marie Andersen working with the DVD Library. Several of these will be there to answer questions, help with membership, distribute the current issue of the monthly newsletter TAGGology, and check out DVDs of past presentations and classes to members of the group. Information about the Group, presentations, classes, and class notes can be found at the websites mentioned above. UTAH VALLEY TECHNOLOGY AND GENEALOGY GROUP MEETING (UVTAGG)
The next regular, second-Saturday-of-the-month meeting of the Utah Valley Technology and Genealogy Group - UVTAGG (Formerly the Utah Valley PAF Users Group - UVPAFUG) will be on Saturday, 14 Apr 2012, from 9 am to noon in the LDS "Red Chapel", 4050 North Timpview Drive (650 East), Provo. Information about the Group, main presentations, classes, and class notes are available on their website http://uvtagg.org and the press releases are at http://blog.uvtagg.org .
The main presentation for this meeting will be by Stephen Ehat on FIND ALL YOUR RELATIVES IN THE 1940 U.S. FEDERAL CENSUS. The 1940 US Federal Census was released this week (2 Apr 2012) and digital images are now posted on several sites including the National Archives at http://1940census.archives.gov/ . Several organizations are coordinating efforts to index the entire census. These include FamilySearch Indexing and everyone is encouraged to sign up at https://www.familysearch.org/1940census/ to help. It will take several months to complete the entire index. The presentation at the UVTAGG meeting this month will help people get into the census before it is indexed. Small towns, of course, will be pretty easy; large cities will take more effort, but can still be done, as Steve Ehat will show. Stephen Kent Ehat was born in San Francisco in 1951. Baptized a Latter-day Saint as a convert at age 10, he first attempted to do genealogical research at age 11. He knew too little, but at age 17, when he began studies at BYU, he successfully began a lifetime of family history research and discovery. He has served as a Records Examiner (Remember those?), as a Stake Extraction Director (back in the day when that opportunity first existed), and recently as the Director of a six-stake Family History Center serving Orem and Lindon. He has made a number of presentations at recent BYU Family History Conferences and at the BYU Family History Center Sunday classes and is constantly helping people with their research. He has been to Italy twice for family history research on his own Italian line that arrived in San Francisco 45 years before the earthquake and fire in 1906. He is a California attorney who lives with his wife, Jeanine, in Lindon, Utah, and they have five sons and thirteen -- now almost 14 -- grandchildren.
Following the main presentation there will be several classes about family history and technology with something for everyone at any level of expertise. The teachers and classes presently scheduled for this meeting are: (1) Are Your Ancestors Frozen in Time?, by Claire Brisson-Banks; (2) "Where Did That File Go?" - Understanding and Organizing Computer Files, by Susan Maxwell; (3) Analyzing Census Records, by Stephen Ehat; (4) Personal Help with Family History, by Don Engstrom and Finn Hansen; (5) Video of last month's main presentation: Increasing Productivity on FamilySearch with Sharing Time, by Andrea Schnakenburg; (6) Everything Mac for Genealogy, by Ron Snowden; (7) RootsMagic, by Rene Zamora; (8) Ancestral Quest, by Paul Johnson; and (9) Legacy, by Joel Graham.

UTAH VALLEY TECHNOLOGY AND GENEALOGY GROUP MEETING (UVTAGG)
The next regular, second-Saturday-of-the-month meeting of the Utah Valley Technology and Genealogy Group - UVTAGG (Formerly the Utah Valley PAF Users Group - UVPAFUG) will be on Saturday, 11 Feb 2012, from 9 am to noon in the LDS "Red Chapel", 4050 North Timpview Drive (650 East), Provo. Information about the Group, main presentations, classes, and class notes are available on their website http://uvtagg.org and the press releases are at http://blog.uvtagg.org .
The main presentation for this meeting will be by Randy Bryson on FAMILYSEARCH SCANNING - THE STORY OF OPENING THE GRANITE MOUNTAIN RECORDS VAULT. Since 1938 the Genealogical Society of Utah, which is now part of FamilySearch, has been capturing on film the records of the world and storing that film in the Granite Mountain Records Vault. In the past decade, modern technology and dedicated engineers have developed a means to convert those images on film to images on the Internet. This presentation will provide insight into how the images are being converted, some of the incredible challenges that have been overcome, and how today we experience one of the most prolific efforts in the world to make the records of our ancestors available to a world-wide population. Randy Bryson is currently an Area Family History Advisor in the Utah South Area of the LDS Church and is a past Family History Center Director, as well as formerly serving as 1st Counselor in the Lehi Utah Stake Presidency with assignment over Temple and Family History work. Also, professionally working for the Family History Department, he has had experience in the development and use of FamilySearch.org, newFamilySearch, Scanning, Indexing, and older products such as Personal Ancestral File (PAF), the Pedigree Resource File (PRF), and other systems. He now works to use the Church's technology to provide FamilySearch to the homes of members and nonmembers alike. Brother Bryson lives in Lehi, Utah with his beautiful wife, Madge, also an Area Family History Adviser.
They have two married daughters and three married sons with twelve grandchildren in Utah, Idaho and Alabama.
