UTAH VALLEY TECHNOLOGY AND GENEALOGY GROUP MEETING - UVTAGG
The next regular, second-Saturday-of-the-month meeting of the Utah Valley Technology and Genealogy Group - UVTAGG (Formerly the Utah Valley PAF Users Group - UVPAFUG) will be on Saturday, 11 Jan 2014, from 9 am to noon in the LDS "Red Chapel", 4050 North Timpview Drive (650 East), Provo.  Information about the Group, main presentations, classes, and class notes are available on their website http://uvtagg.org and the press releases are at http://blog.uvtagg.org .

The main presentation this month will be by Diane C. Loosle on DISCOVER THE FUTURE OF THE FAMILY HISTORY LIBRARY AND FAMILY HISTORY CENTERS.  What does the future experience in the Family History Library and Centers look like? What are the future plans for the Family History Library and Centers? How will things change in the next few years with more records and books being available online? How do the new partnerships between FamilySearch and Ancestry, MyHeritage and DC Thomson Family History change things? What is the “discovery center” we keep hearing about? These and other questions you may have about the Family History Library and Family History Centers will be addressed.  Diane C. Loosle is the new Director of the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, as well as the Family History Centers worldwide, so this will be a chance to hear what is really happening, not just rumors.  She is an Accredited Genealogist^® and a Certified Genealogist^SM  with a Bachelors degree in History from BYU with an emphasis in Family History and Genealogy and a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Utah.   She has worked for FamilySearch for the past twenty years as a British Reference Consultant, British Reference Unit Supervisor, Customer Experience Manager, FamilySearch Genealogical Community Services Manager and now as Director of the Family History Library and Family History Centers worldwide. All meetings of UVTAGG are open to the public whether members of the Group or not. The Group has the goal of helping individuals use technology to further their family history and there are usually about 100 attending the monthly meetings on the second Saturdays, most of whom are Family History Consultants. The officers are Gerhard Ruf, President; Laurie Castillo, 1st VP; Don Snow, 2nd VP; Liz Kennington, Newsletter Editor; Renee Zamora, Secretary; Kay Baker, Don Engstrom, and Rayanne Melick working with membership and finances, Bruce Merrill and Marie Andersen working with the DVD Library, and Chris Stevenson as the Webmaster.  Several of these will be there to answer questions, help with membership, distribute the current issue of the monthly newsletter TAGGology, and check out and sell DVDs of past presentations and classes to members of the group.  Many members don't live close enough to participate in the monthly meetings, but belong by paying the $10 per year dues to receive the monthly newsletter via email and purchase DVDs of the presentations and classes.  Gift memberships are wonderful presents for family history-minded relatives, friends, and Family History Consultants.  See more information on the websites mentioned above about the presentations, classes, and class notes, or to join the Group.  You can also contact President Gerhard Ruf at pres@uvtagg.org (801-225-6106), or 1st VP Laurie Castillo at laurie@everythingisrelative.net, or 2nd VP Don Snow at snowd@math.byu.edu.

UTAH VALLEY TECHNOLOGY AND GENEALOGY GROUP MEETING (UVTAGG)

The main presentation this month will be by Timothy G. Cross of the FamilySearch Department of the LDS Church.  His presentation is titled, THE LATEST AND GREATEST IN FAMILY TREE PHOTOS AND STORIES.  Tim is currently responsible for FamilySearch Family Tree Photos and Stories which now includes Documents.  Pictures and stories of our ancestors help us know them much more than just knowing their dates and places.  For those who have uploaded scanned documents, e.g. birth certificates, into the Photos section, there is now an easy way to move them into the Documents section and that's probably the reason that the Documents section is with the Photos now.  This is still in beta test, so we can hope that eventually the Documents section will be with the Sources section where you would expect to find it.  The file size limit has also been increased recently for uploaded files and you can now upload pdf's (Portable Document Format).  Family Tree has been making good strides from when it started a couple of years ago.  Tim Cross graduated from BYU in 1990 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Information Management in the Business School and has worked as a Product Manager for FamilySearch for 9 years.  Prior to working for the Church, Tim worked in the computer industry for PriceWaterhouse, Booz, Allen, & Hamilton, and for Novell.  He and his family live in Mapleton, Utah.

UTAH VALLEY TECHNOLOGY AND GENEALOGY GROUP MEETING (UVTAGG)

The main presentation this month will be by Karen Clifford on A FANCIFUL GENEALOGY OR CLUES TO THE PAST.   This presentation will explain how to approach an online public family tree appreciatively and cautiously in order to determine the sources for the statements of fact provided.  It will include an overview of record groups most likely to keep you from going astray and a few good techniques to speed up your work. Karen Clifford is an Accredited Genealogist Professional (AG), and a Fellow of the Utah Genealogical Association (FUGA). She is President/CEO of Genealogy Research Associates, Inc. -- http://www.graonline.com .  She teaches family history classes at BYU, the Salt Lake Community College, and Monterey Peninsula College, as well as other venues.  She has authored several college textbooks on genealogy and credentialing in genealogy and numerous family histories.  She serves as Co-Chair of the Testing Committee of the International Commission for the Accreditation of Professional Genealogists (one of the two major credentialing bodies for genealogists in the United States see http://www.ICAPGen.org .  She served 10 years on the board of the Federation of Genealogical Societies and was the founding President of the Monterey County (CA) Genealogy Society.  Karen was the Director of the Monterey California Family History Center for ten years and now lives in Provo where her husband, Ray Clifford, is an Associate Dean of the BYU College of Humanities.
