[UVTAGG] UPDATED Press Release for UVTAGG meeting Saturday morning, 09 Jun 2018, Provo, Utah and online

The next meeting of the UVTAGG (Utah Valley Technology and Genealogy Group) will be on Saturday, 09 Jun 2018, from 9 am to noon in the LDS RIVERSIDE/EDGEWOOD Chapel (NOTE THE CHANGE OF LOCATION due to a funeral), 3511 North 180 East, Provo, Utah 84604.  This is the regular second-Saturday-of-the-month meeting. The main presentation this month will be by Claire V. Brisson-Banks, MLIS, AG, on ATTACKING BRICK WALLS.  Ms Brisson-Banks is an Accredited Genealogist and CEO of Timeless Genealogies and will be speaking to us from her home in Independence, Missouri.  Everyone encounters problems of going beyond certain points on some of their ancestral lines and these have come to called "brick walls".  This presentation will show us some ideas of how to attack these problems and what can be done to get through them.  Born in Rhode Island, Claire has lived in a variety of locations throughout the world with Missouri currently being her home. After raising a large family, she returned to education and completed her BS, MLIS and two AGs to further her career as an academic educator and an in depth genealogical researcher. Besides running Timeless Genealogies, she is a Professor for the Family History program at BYU-Idaho and provides technical support for the award winning family tree software, Ancestral Quest. She lectures at various conferences throughout the world and has done webinars and hang-outs that are available online. NOTE:  Because of the Utah Valley Marathon race that Saturday morning if you have to cross University Avenue to get to the LDS "Red" Chapel in Provo, you may have to wait to cross University Avenue or else go all the way down to 3rd South in Provo to get around.

All meetings of UVTAGG are open to the public, whether members of the Group or not.  The meetings have something for all levels of family history expertise including youth, those just getting started in genealogy, seasoned genealogists, and LDS Temple and Family History Consultants.  The Group has the goal of helping individuals use technology to further their family history and there are usually 40-50 people attending the monthly meetings in person and more attending via the Internet.  Many are LDS Temple and Family History Consultants.  To watch the meeting on the Internet go to the website  http://uvtagg.org  on Saturday morning, 09 Jun 2018, at 9 am MDT, and click the link to join with your Facebook account.  To watch the class at about 10:35 am, repeat this process.  The live presentation and class are open to the public and anyone can sign up to receive emails of the the press releases on the blog  http://blog.uvtagg.org .  Members of the Group ($15/year) can also watch the more than 400 past presentations and classes on the website.  Members also receive the monthly newsletter TAGGology via email and have access to many genealogy resources through UVTAGG's membership in the Federation of Genealogical Societies.  The officers are Gerhard Ruf, President; Laurie Castillo, 1st VP; Don Snow, 2nd VP; Eileen Phelps, Newsletter Editor; Don Engstrom, Membership; Rayanne Melick, Finances; Bruce Merrill and Marie Andersen, Video Library; and Rick Wightman, Chris Stevenson, Brent Nelson, and Rick Klemetson, Webmasters.  Several of these will be at the meeting to answer questions, help with membership, and check out or sell to members the inexpensive DVDs of past main presentations and classes.  Gift memberships and DVDs make good presents for family history-minded relatives, friends, and Temple and Family History Consultants.  Volunteers who help with the organization get membership at reduced rates.  For further information contact President Gerhard Ruf at pres@uvtagg.org  (801-225-6106), or 1st VP Laurie Castillo at gengal@comcast.net , or 2nd VP Don Snow at snowd@math.byu.edu .

[UVTAGG] Press Release for UVTAGG meeting Saturday morning, 12 May 2018, Provo, Utah 

The next meeting of the UVTAGG (Utah Valley Technology and Genealogy Group) will be on Saturday, 12 May 2018, from 9 am to noon in the LDS "Red Chapel", 4050 North Timpview Drive (650 East), Provo.  This is the regular second-Saturday-of-the-month meeting of this Group which has been meeting in Provo for the past 27 years.  The main presentation this month will be by George D. Hickman on INTERNET PRIVACY, PASSWORDS, AND AVOIDING ONLINE PROBLEMS.  The daily news is constantly bringing us information about identity theft and personal information being stolen from both individuals and companies.  It would be nice if we could all just use our computers and the Internet without having to worry about such things, but we can't.  This presentation will give us some ways to avoid problems and minimize our online risks.  George D. Hickman is an Associate Professor of Information Systems and Technology at Utah Valley University and has degrees from BYU and San Diego State University.  He has nearly completed his PhD at Indiana State University and will receive that soon.  He has taught at UVU since 1996 with specializations in Computer Forensics, Information Security, and Mac OS X / Mac Server.  He is the coordinator for the Digital and Computer Forensics emphasis in the IT Degree at Utah Valley University and is also the Internship Coordinator for internships in the IS&T Department.  More information about him is on his UVU webpage  https://www.uvu.edu/profpages/profiles/show/user_id/2038
